HI-AWARE’s research was recently featured in the science journal Nature. The article Impact of a global temperature rise of 1.5 degrees Celsius on Asia’s glaciers provides evidence on Himalayan glacier melting under climate change. The research shows that a global temperature rise of 1.5 °C will lead to a warming of about 2°C in the high mountains of Asia. Limiting global warming to no more than 1.5 °C may still generate a loss of approximately 65% of the present-day ice in Himalayan glaciers by the end of the century. These projections have potentially serious consequences for regional water management and mountain communities.
